From 2005-2007 I played in a duo with Seattle pianist/composer Amy Rubin. Our focus was on tango music, particularly the music of Astor Piazzolla. Both Amy and I had been inspired by his music for many years. Tango Izquierda was written for this duo. While I was composing this in November of 2006, a Democratic majority took control of both chambers of Congress for the first time since 1995. I found this encouraging at the time, so I used the word izquierda (Spanish for left) in the title.
