In the Ballad movement my focus was primarily on the melody that occurs in the second half. This began as fragment I came up with while improvising. It took quite a bit of conscious effort to construct something that would develop in a logical way, and would be simple yet interesting enough to be memorable. The harmony and voice leading are inspired by the music of Duke Ellington and other big band composers. The theme is also very Ellington influenced, particularly the first phrase.
