about

String Power violist and arranger Leanne Darling writes:

Azizah is one of the more popular songs written by Egyptian composer Mohammed Abdel Wahab, who was famous not only for inventing the Egyptian movie musical, but also for writing the national anthems of Libya and Tunisia. He composed over 1,820 songs from the early 1930s to the 1980s, incorporating western rhythms and harmonies into classical Arabic melodies. Innovative at the time, his music has influenced generations of middle eastern composers.
In the performance of Abdel Wahab’s music, like much of traditional Arabic music, the technique of heterophony is often used: players add their own ornaments to the notated music creating a rich and intricate texture.
